You need to make an account on Wordpress.org, and go to your member profile on there to get your api code which is needed to activate Akismet. It sounds like you don't have it set up. I didn't use it for a long time cause I didn't know what it was for, finally set it up, and it's amazing how much it helps block spam. Just set up the Akismet plugin that you should have activated.
