Thank you for reminding people to respect others works.  You have the idea of copyright down right.(I am not a lawyer either)  The notion of copyright was actually written in our constitution as a way to encourage arts, and science. It was orginally set in place to allow people to earn an income from the unique products they develop.  Those products could be a picture, book, article and more.
